The first settlers arrived in the Midale area in 1903, and almost all of them filed on a 160-acre homestead, which the Canadian government offered to men 18 and older. Midale was incorporated as a village in 1907.
For a time the settlement was known as the Halbrite and Macoun siding. The first suggestion for a permanent name was "Mitchell," after Dr. R.M. Mitchell, who served an area from Estevan to Moose Jaw between 1899 and 1903. Because another community already had that name, a compromise was reached: the first two letters of "Mitchell" were joined with the last name of Ole Dale, credited as the area's first settler, to make "Midale."
Midale's first hospital opened on March 7, 1949, and Premier T.C. Douglas came to cut the ribbon. Today the town, now in the Rural Municipality of Cymri No. 36 on Highway 39 midway between Weyburn and Estevan, honours its agricultural and pioneer roots with the annual Midale Threshing Bee.
